URL tagging

Tagging Google Ads links

UTM parameters for Google Ads, the click id OrcLink reads, and the channel the click lands in.

Where the parameters go

Final URL suffix (account, campaign or ad group settings). Turn on auto-tagging in the account settings.

Parameters

Build it for one landing page with the URL builder (Dashboard > URL builder): it refuses a value that looks like an email address, a phone number, a person's name or a merge tag for one, and sends nothing you type to OrcLink.

utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_term={keyword}&utm_content={creative}

Google Ads macros used

  • {campaignid}: the campaign id (ValueTrack)
  • {keyword}: the keyword that matched (search); empty on other networks (ValueTrack)
  • {creative}: the ad id (ValueTrack)

Click id

gclid: Google adds gclid (or gbraid / wbraid on some iOS traffic) when auto-tagging is on. OrcLink reads all three.

Channel in OrcLink reports

Google Paid. Your own channel rules (Settings > Channel rules) run before the built-in ones.

Notes

  • A click with gclid is Google Paid whatever the UTMs say: a click id beats UTM values.

Keep personal data out of links

A landing URL is seen by every script on the page and can be logged by browsers and servers on the way. Never put an email address, a phone number or a name in a parameter, and never a merge tag that inserts one.
